At Smithfield Public School our Early Intervention Unit (EIU) promotes learning through educational programs for children 3 years to 6 years of age, who have an identified disability.
Support class aims to:
- Assist families in facilitating the development and care of their child.
- Provide quality educational programs
- Assist the co-ordination of skills across environments
- Promote the generalisation of skills across environments
- Co-ordinate transition to school procedures for children.
What our unit offers:
An individualised learning program is designed for each child in collaboration with parents, early childhood teachers and other professionals.
Groupings:
Sessional Program
- Small class groupings (5-8 children)
- 2.5 hours per session, half day
- Attendance 2 days per week
- Mon/Tues AM or PM or WED/THU AM or PM
- Morning Sessions (9-11:30am)
- Afternoon Sessions (12:30 -2:45pm)
- Individual programs run by specialist teachers and supported by teacher's aide.
- Supporting the staff of early childhood educator outside of EIU. classes to provide personalised learning and support
- Developing individual, coordinated transition plans to support children moving from early education into school
- Establishing and maintaining links with a range of local services in the community.

Early intervention classes
A limited number of early intervention classes are located in NSW public schools and operate during school terms. At SPS children usually attend for 2.5 hour sessions, two to two days a week. Class sizes range from five to eight children and children are aged between three and six years.
Early intervention teachers works in partnership with parents and carers and other support agencies to plan personalised learning and support at preschool, based on individual interests and personal care, health, social and wellbeing needs.
