Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Kiama and Parramatta public schools hosted the launch of Education Week today.

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

On Friday November 20, the senior boys and girls softball teams headed off to Endeavour Reserve to play in their respective finals.

The boys played Cecil Hills, who had a very strong team and were undefeated throughout the season. I knew our boys had to bring their A game if they wanted to win and that is exactly what they did. Winning the toss we sent them into bat and they were able to get 2 runs home. We had to bat and that is what we did. Hinckley and Kobe hit home runs and Kaine and James were also able to get across the plate; giving us 4 runs before we had 3 out. With an incomplete 2nd innings meaning the final score stood at 4-2. Smithfield Boys had the Premiership!!!!!! Congratulations to all the boys for a fantastic season; full of hard word, dedication and commitment. Well done; Kaine Bean, James Nguyen, Gianni Pinna Hinckley Tapusoa, Kobe Faumuina, Mahdi Alshara, Jordan Nguyen, Ryan Panuccio, Stefan Grujic, Jordan Van den Hooven and Patrick Shain.

The girls played Fairfield West and unfortunately we lost the toss and had to bat 1st. But, the girls were ready; they had trained hard and knew exactly what they had to do to win the game. With some excellent batting we were able to get 6 home, a terrific effort. I knew it would be hard for FW to match this with our wonderful field play. Due an awesome team effort in the field FW only managed to score 2 runs. Smithfield Girls had won the Premiership too!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations to all the girls for a fabulous season, once again full of hard work, dedication and commitment. Well done; Kristyn Baker, Sylvia Nanziri, Nicolette Talevski, Lauren Doan, Ola Abdul-Hadi,

Nathaanki Karunaivel, Giulia Pinna, Jessica Ashcroft,

Combined School Festival 2015

On the 5th of November students from Smithfield Public School joined up with their peers from Fairfield West Public School to perform at the Combined Schools Festival. This festival took place at Smithfield RSL and was attended by hundreds of spectators. These spectators were treated to a wide variety of performances including dance groups from both schools, individual school choirs, a large combined school choir, a drumming group and even a staff band. The quality of the performances was very high and the night ran smoothly. A massive thank you to everyone who was involved with the night! This includes students, teachers and family members - without such great support and enthusiasm the night would have been impossible. We had parents doing makeup, teachers moving around props and sound equipment and even principals manning the BBQ to cook sausages for the performers. Everyone did their part to assure the night was such a massive success. A big thank you must also go to Smithfield RSL, for not only providing the venue, but for making us feel most welcome.

I am looking forward to seeing what these two schools might be able to achieve in collaboration next year!

Last Friday, the 27th of November, Smithfield Public School held an assembly to celebrate the outstanding achievements of some of it's staff and students. Teachers, students and families, both past and present, gathered to honour the recipients who had achieved some amazing results in a number of different fields. The assembly was a triumphant success and was concluded by a performance by the Smithfield School Choir.

The award winners were as follows:

Maria Siwak - awarded the highest level of teacher accreditation, that of lead teacher - a feat completed by less than 30 teachers across NSW.

Lynne Fox - awarded the NSW Excellent Service to School Sport Award

Angelina Talevski - winner of the Regional Public Speaking Award

Krystyn Baker - winner of the Regional Sports Female Award

Jessica Luu - winner of the prestigious Regional Art Award

Steffi Tran, Nathaanki Karunaivel, Jasmine Tran, Nicolette Talevski & Justin Nguyen - mathematicians who competed in the 2015 Maths Olympiad are received perfect scores every time.

Note: a regional award involves a competition involving 220 schools.

As you can see the level of success experienced by Smithfield teachers and students in a variety of areas is truly amazing. We are a very proud school community!

From Monday 12th to Wednesday 14th our Stage 3 students attended the Aussie Bush Camp. This camp was a huge success with the students and staff taking part in a wide variety of activities including canoeing, rock climbing and the daunting giant flying fox. The camp was splendidly run with all staff and students well catered for and given countless opportunities to enjoy themselves and try new things.

We would like to thank everyone involved. Without such terrific parents, staff and students the camp would not have been such a success!

Book Week 2015

On Tuesday 25th August Smithfield Public School celebrated National Childrens Book Week. Some special guests at our school were Willy wonka, Pinnocio, a few Paper Bag Princesses and an Oooma Loompa.

The parade was an opportunity to see some of the passion and talent our students and teachers have for reading. It was one of the most impressive book parades at our school and even The Queen of Hearts showed up with her army of cards firing bubbles at the crowd.

Everyone enjoyed hearing from guest author Deborah Abela, sharing stories of being arrested, put in prison and having monkey poo thrown at her. Deborah encouraged students to write in interesting ways by adding ‘trouble' to their stories. She ignited a spark in readers from Kindergarten all the way through to Year 6.

Thank you to all the parents who showed their support, we loved celebrating the day with you.

Smithfield Athletics Carnival

The annual Smithfield Public School Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday 30th July, 2015. Although it was postponed by a week, it was worth the wait for this sunny winters day. It was a terrific day filled with fun, races, sportsmanship and cheering. All students, parents and teachers participated enthusiastically in the events and activities. Many of the students performed exceptionally well and we look forward to taking 52 students to the Horsley Zone Carnival. We had 3 records broken this year. Savali Tapugao in the 11yrs 100m as well as the 200m and Lionel Khou in the 200m. Congratulations Savali and Lionel!!

Well done to our Athletics Champions this year who achieved wonderful results in all track and field events. The results were very close and we even had a tie for Senior Boys Champion. Congratulations to all!

Education Week

Education Week is a major event on the NSW public schools calendar. It is a time to celebrate the achievements and successes of our students, teachers and support staff across all NSW public schools. This year it was held in Week 3, between the 27^th and 31^st of July, with the theme being 'Celebrating Local Heroes'.

Smithfield Public School had a wonderful week, culminating in our School Open Day where parents, grandparents and friends were invited to visit our classrooms and find out more about all the wonderful things our students have been working on. We were privileged to have so many members of our school community attend our Open Day and we hope they enjoyed the experience as much as our students and teachers.

NAIDOC Week

On Friday 26th June, our students, staff, parents and community members joined together to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Our fantastic students led an assembly which was attended by many dignitaries and local Aboriginal community members.

The kindergarten students did a fabulous job singing Red, Black and Yellow and we were grateful to Aunty Thelma Quartey and the Urban Zenadth Kes Torres Strait Islander dancers who demonstrated a variety of dances. We were joined by Aunty Fran Bodkin who shared a local dreaming story and Uncle Steve Williams who led a smoking ceremony to cleanse our school grounds.

After the assembly, volunteers from Strong Fathers, Strong Families worked with our K-2 students sharing a range of objects including didgeridoos, boomerangs and emu callers.

We were privileged to receive so much support from our local community for this event which included a grant to assist us with expenses from Fairfield City Council.

A 'Super' Disco

On the 11^thof June 2015, Smithfield Public School held its super-hero and super-villain themed disco. The night was an absolute success and special thanks needs to be given to all the teachers and parents who helped out on the night. In total, $1300 was raised and this money will go towards the Year 6 end of year gift. It was a truly wonderful night and much fun was had by all. We look forward to seeing you all at the next school disco!

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

On Thursday 28^thMay Smithfield Public put on a lavish feast of scrumptious delights in support of the Cancer Council. Our participation in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea raised in excess of $520. These funds will support research into cancer, educational programs and provide direct support for individuals suffering from cancer. A big thank you to all that donated.

The Zone Cross Country

After being postponed a week due to wet weather, the Horsely Zone Cross Country Carnival was held on Friday May 29. Miss Truscott and Mrs Fox took 47 fit and fast students to Brenan Park to represent our school. All of the competitors pushed themselves to achieve their best and Smithfield finished in fourth place! This is an outstanding achievement. Special congratulations go to Lionel Khou, Helana Carroll and Zahara Moukhallalati who all made it through to the regional carnival. I would also like to commend all students on their exceptional behaviour on the day, you showed that Smithfield Public School really is the best school!

We would also like to thank all the parent helpers who gave their time to ensure the carnival was a great success.

Annual Cross Country Carnival 2015

Last Thursday 7th May, Year 2 students, turning 8, through to Year 6 walked to Brenan Park for our annual Cross Country Carnival. We were blessed with fine weather and an enjoyable day was had by all. Thank you to the following parents - Mrs Britten, Mrs Pinna, Mrs Waddell, Mrs Moore, Mrs Basher, Mr and Mrs Van Den Hooven, Mr Thorpe and Mrs King who assisted as field stewards. Without your terrific help our carnival could not have gone ahead due to safety reasons. Also, thank you to Mr and Mrs Papallo for their help with the PA system and course direction. A HUGE thank you to Mrs Kean for providing us with a ute to transport the equipment and for helping me set and pack up the course. Thanks also must go to Mrs Siwak and the Sports House Captains and Vice Captains for coming to school early to help set up the event. Winter PSSA Set To Begin

The Winter PSSA season is now set to begin on Friday the 8th of May. The teams were selected on Monday of Week 2.

DEBATING CHAMPIONS 2013

Smithfield Public School participated in The Parks Area Debating Challenge 2013 and were overall winners of the competition! The Smithfield Debating team have now won this competition for three years running.The grand final debate saw Smithfield Public School against Governor Phillip King Public School with the topic "That a lot of money means a successful life." Smithfield Public School was the negative team and provided some very strong arguments. The standard of the debate was very high and the debating team from Smithfield Public School were outstanding in their efforts. Well done!!

Regional Athletics Success!

On Wednesday September 10, we had the pleasure of supporting 10 students at the Sydney South West Regional Athletics Championships. The standard of the competition was very high as competitors strove for a position in the State Carnival. Smithfield Public School is extremely proud because Villiami Havea will now go on to complete at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships in October. He place 2nd in the 12yrs senior boys Discus. Well done!

Halloween Disco

Smithfield Public School hosted our annual Halloween Disco. Students enjoyed dressing up as their favourite scary character. Students enjoyed having their photo taken in our SPS Photobooth. We also had 'Best Dressed' and 'Best Dancer' awards. Students were well behaved and enjoyed the night!

All money raised from the disco will go to the Year 6 Farewell.

The Regional Swimming Carnival Report

On March17, nine students travelled to Gordon Fetterplace Aquatic Centre, Bradbury to compete in the Regional Swimming Championships. All nine students swam their best and the results achieved were outstanding.

Chloe Ang has made history for Smithfield Public School. She competed in 5 individual events and has qualified for State in every single one, truly amazing! Her results included: 1st in the 50m Freestyle, Breastroke, Butterfly and 200m Medley and 2nd in the 50m Backstroke. Chloe along with Katelyn Siv, Jasmine Sar and Helana Carroll competed in the Jnr Girls Relay which placed 12th out of 24, beating their zone time by an amazing 17 seconds. Katelyn Siv also placed 10th in the 50m Breastroke.

Christopher Huynh swam brilliantly and he too will go to State in the 50m Breastroke placing 2nd. Christopher also placed 5th in the 200m Medley, 5th in the 50m Backstroke, 12th in the 50m Butterfly and13th in the 50m Freestyle. Christopher also swam in the Jnr Boys Relay with Francesco Panuccio, Owen Thai and Marcus Carbone and they placed 18th out of 24.

Kaitlin Nguyen swam well in the 12yrs 50m Backstroke as did Francesco Panuccio in the 9yrs 50m Freestyle.

The excellent swimming that our team produced awarded Smithfield PS 10th place out of 288 schools in the region. Fantastic!

Well done and congratulations to all of you.

Good luck to Chloe and Christopher as they move forward and compete in the State Swimming Championships next Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th March at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre Homebush.

SPS Winners of the NSW Mathematics Junior Olympiad

Wonderful news! Our talented Year 5/6M students have won the NSW Mathematics Junior Olympiad. We share the honour with North Rocks Primary school. This is a wonderful achievement whereby our children have outperformed others from the most affluent and exclusive areas of the state. Congratulations to the children and their inspiring teacher, Merisa Mulaosmanovic.

The complex mathematics tasks are given over a period of weeks. The answers are sent online so that examiners can see the student's computations around demanding, complex mathematical problems.

Parks Area Music Festival

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators called Book Week. At Smithfield Public School classroom teachers and our librarian Mrs Ranaweera developed a range of activities relating to a theme ‘Connect to Reading' to highlight the importance of reading.

This year's theme, ‘Connect to Reading' is about enjoying the experience of exploring story, and travelling to other worlds. Reading to connect also suggests that reading assists in creating a bond with others. Within the world of the contemporary child, this is also relevant as they read books and they read to connect through a variety of media.

On Friday 8^th August, 49 students competed in the Horsley Zone Athletics Carnival. What a WONDERFUL day. All students tried their very best and due to their fine efforts were placed 2^nd out of 16 schools. This is the best result we have ever had. At Smithfield Public School students had the opportunity to learn about traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games, music, culture, dance and history.

On Thursday 20th February Smithfield Public School set out to Fairfield Leisure Centre for the annual Swimming Carnival.

With beautiful weather, excellent staff and parent support plus student participation the carnival was very successful.

Learning about Science

Jolly Bops Show

On Monday, 24^thFebruary, teachers invited the Science show performers, Jollybops to our school. Students, K-6, explored a range of scientific concepts in Physics and Chemistry, such as Solids, Liquids and Gases, Energy and Temperature. Student volunteers were invited onto the stage with the Jolly Professor and Rusty the Robot to help with different science experiments. We had students changing water to powder, exploding balloons, freezing items and shattering them using nitrogen, gas explosions and much more. Students were in awe laughing, thinking, predicting, observing and talking about science. "I love Jollybops, this is the best school" was a quote from a student in 1 Hardaker. Thank you Jollybops!

This experimental learning will remain in our children's memories. We anticipate some new interest in our most recent Science Program, Primary Connections. We look forward to speaking with parents about our children's learning in Science at the P&C meeting on Monday, 10^thMarch at 9:10am.

PSSA Success

PSSA SUCCESS!

On Friday 15th November, 3 of our PSSA teams travelled to Endeavour Park to play in their respective finals. The senior boys cricket team played a terrific match against Fairfield West but were defeated. The senior girls and boys softball teams had a wonderful day with both teams being successful. The girls beat Fairfield West 4-1 while the boys, who remained undefeated, crushed Canley Heights 9-2. The students are commended for their dedication and commitment which transformed them into winning teams!

At the end of last term 50 of our talented students participated in the Parks Music Festival. Mrs Bui and I were extremely proud to have been given the opportunity to showcase our school. The students in the dance group performed a hip hop dance routine and looked amazing! A big thank you to Mrs Stone and Mrs Bui for helping with sewing costumes. On Wednesday, September 11, I had the pleasure of supporting 6 students to the Sydney South West Regional Athletics Championships. We all had a terrific day and the behaviour of all students was exceptional. Selena Tualauta placed 2nd in the senior girls Discus and 3rd in the senior girls Shot Put.

Leiven Vunipola won the 11yrs boys High Jump and

Viliami Havea placed 2nd in the 11yrs boys Discus.

These 3 students will now progress to the State Carnival on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th October at the Sydney Athletics Centre, Homebush.

SPS wins a $5000 grant from Credit Union Australia!

How good can our community be? Miss Hardaker and Miss LaBrasceur demonstrated this quite well over the last few weeks as they rallied the community to support our school's effort to win $5000 from the Credit Union Australia. With the overwhelming support from Smithfield PS and our community we were the clear winners. CUA presented the school with the cheque on Tuesday 3rd Spetember at a whole school assembly. What a great effort!

Personalised Learning and Support Tool 2013 Trial

During the next few weeks our school, along with other public schools in the area, will be participating in the trial of a new tool (PLASST) being developed by the Department of Education and Communities for teachers to identify the learning and support needs of their students.

This trial is focussed on the development of a sound and reliable online tool that, when finalised, can be used by teachers in collaboration with parents and carers to identify the strengths and educational needs of students with additional learning and support needs. This information will assist schools in planning and personalising learning and support for individual students who require adjustments in their day to day learning.

The trial will involve teachers completing an online questionnaire about the educational needs of some of their students. Students themselves will not be required to complete any additional work or be formally assessed as part of the trial. This trial will not impact on students' education provisions.

Further information about the PLASST trial, including the collection and use of data in the trial, will be provided by the school in a letter to parents and carers.

If you have any questions about the PLASST trial, would like to discuss your child's involvement or would prefer that your child does not participate, please telephone the school on 96045475.

The Play Day was a one day workshop to work with teachers and students to develop a piece of play built drama.Teachers and students will continue to rehearse their piece of drama until Term 4 where they come together to present their drama work to other students. Today, Smithfield Public School competed in the first round of The Premier's Debating Challenge against Lurnea Public School. The topic for the debate was that "Year 5 & 6 should learn an Asian language". All the students rose to the challenge and came up with some strong arguments. Smithfield Public School students gave an outstanding performance and were the winners of the debate. Well done to all the debating team!

Swimming Carnival Success!

On Thursday 21st February Smithfield Public School set out to Fairfield Leisure Centre for the annual Swimming Carnival.

With beautiful weather, excellent staff and parent support and student participation the carnival was successful.

There were some impressive results and these along with the Junior and Senior Swimming Champions will be announced next Friday at assembly.

The house placings were as follows:

1st – Bossley

2nd – Chisholm

3rd – Brenan

4th – Kenyon

Senior Girls Softball - Premiers 2012

The Senior girls' softball team won the PSSA Premiership last Friday 23rd November 2012. The girls played an excellent grand final and must be congratulated for playing as a champion team. The final score of 11 to 1 clearly show how committed they were to the game. The girls trained extremely hard throughout the season and due to their committed efforts went through the entire competition undefeated. It has been an absolute pleasure training these girls, whatever I ask of them , they did without hesitation or complaint both on and off the field. It was this respect and teamwork that laid the foundation from which a champion team was built. I am so proud of all the girls and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of their softball adventure.

The students of Smithfield Public School will be presenting a spectacular concert in Week10!The theme for this year is ‘Christmas Around the World'. The presentations will showcase how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world.

Please find show and ticketing information below:

Show Dates:Tuesday 11 December 2012 and Wednesday 12 December 2012. The same show will be performed over two days.

Venue: Smithfield Public School hall

Time: Doors open at 9.00am. The show will start at approximately 9.10am and finish at 11.00am.

Ticket Cost: $5.00 --per ticket

Parents bringing younger children to the show who require seats will need to consider this when purchasing tickets. Prams must remain outside of the hall due to safety and exiting reasons.

Ticket Sale: Tickets can be purchased between 8.30am and 9.00am during weeks 8 and 9 on Monday,Tuesday,Thursday and Friday at the front of the school hall. Any leftover tickets can be purchased at the door on the day,but availability cannot be guaranteed.

This year the junior and senior dance group participated in Wakakirri a National Story Dance competition. 60 of our students from years 1-6 participated and performed at The Hills Centre at Castle Hill. Our students did an amazing job and our school recieved an award for Best Creative Use of Costumes and Set Design. We are extremely proud of our students and could not have done such an amazing job without the support of parents and teachers in the smithfield community.

Speaking at Smithfield Public School on Friday 15th June, Premier Barry O'Farrell launched the start of The Premier's Sporting Challenge for 2012. He also announced Huegill would chair the Premier's Council for Active Living.

"Geoff Huegill is not only one of Australia's finest athletes but he is an outstanding role model," O'Farrell said.

"Geoff's journey from competitive swimming and retirement to his personal battle to lose 45 kilos and make a stunning comeback is an inspiration to anyone who thinks it's too late to turn around their lifestyle around."

His appointment comes as O'Farrell launched this year's Premier's Sporting Challenge which will see around 230,000 students participate in initiatives that reward them for being active.

Students at Smithfield Public School enjoy the challenge to be more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea!

Smithfield Public School hosted Australia's Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 24th May 2012. Students across the school brought in some morning tea and gave a gold coin donate to help support Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Teachers, parents and students enjoyed the morning and raised lots of money for a great cause!

The funds raised from Australia's Biggest Morning Tea help Cancer Council to continue our work in cancer research, prevention, education and support services. In 2011, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea raised over $11.2 million!

Connected Classrooms

Today, Smithfield Public School (SPS), using the connected classroom technology, have had a video conference with Jasper Road Public School from the comfort of the classroom at SPS.

This term, Stage 2 LaBrasceur have been working on the topic "Our Fleeting Past" from an Aboriginal perspective. They have been using the internet to complete a research project on well known Aboriginal people. A selection of these projects were presented to the students at Jasper Road Public School. Jasper Road Public School also presented a research project they completed this term to us. Students asked each other questions and were able to interact and talk about their project via the webcam in both classrooms.

A great effort by all students. Well done!

The Hon Chris Bowen MP attended the official opening the new classroom facilities at Smithfield Public School on Monday 5th December 2011. The new classrooms were built as part of the Federal Government's Building The Education Revolution (BER). FAIRFIELD PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

Last term students at Smithfield Public School competed in a school based public speaking competition. One student from each stage was selected to represent the school at Fairfield SEA Public Speaking Competition held on Monday 25th July, 2011. A HUGE congratulations to the students who made it to the Area Finals.

All four students performed outstandingly and should be commended on their efforts against some tough competition. Jessica Miller was chosen as one of the top six in the Fairfield Area. She will now go on the Combined Fairfield and Hoxton SEA Public Speaking Final to be held on Tuesday 30th August, 2011 at Smithfield Public School.

Smithfield Public School hosted the third round of the Premier's Debating Challenge 2011 against last year's overall winners of the competition, Harrington Street Public School. The topic for the debate was "That we should change the Australian Flag" and as the negative team Smithfield Public School provided some great arguments as to why we should keep the flag. Smithfield Public School put in a great effort and won the debate. Smithfield Public School has been successful at winning all 3 rounds and now moves through the quarter finals.

Smithfield Public School students hosted Australia's Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 26th May 2011. The students and parents enjoyed a variety of delicious foods including dim sims, fried rice, cookies, slices and scrumptious cakes. Smithfield Public School raised $450.00 for the Cancer Council. Each dollar donated will assist to fund the Cancer Council's research, prevention, education and support services.

Smithfield Public School students participated in the Cross Country today, Thursday 5th May, 2011 at Brenan Park. Students enjoyed running in their age groups and trying their best for their house colour. The war cries were loud and cheerful as students raced around the park. Students returned to school to watch the Kindergarten and Year 1 students take part in their fun run on the field. Teachers and parents also had the opportunity to race and have fun. All the teachers and students were very happy that it didn't rain! Teachers were also pleased that everybody was so well behaved.

Schools Clean Up Day

We used rubber gloves and plastic bags to clean up our school including the playground and around our classrooms. We had lots of fun! Swimming Carnival 2011

This year's swimming carnival was a great success thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment shown by students. Students participated a range of races including 50m freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 50m Breaststroke and relay races. Students also had a great time participating in a range of water sports activities. The house war cries were the highlight of the day and showed great team spirit. We also think we must have been heard all over Fairfield! A big congratulations to Chisholm who was the winning house. Thank you to all the parent helpers for their efforts on the day and all the teachers who worked hard to make the day run smoothly.

UNSW Spelling Competition 2010

Earlier this year students participated in the UNSW Spelling Competition. Our students perform well during these competitions and this year we have even more to celebrate. On Friday 26th November, Kevin Cao in Year 5 was invited to attend a special presentation ceremony at UNSW. There he was presented with a medallion in recognition of scoring the highest score for any Year 5 student in NSW in this year's Spelling paper. Congratulations Kevin. We are very proud of your achievement.

On Friday 26th November, the Senior Boys and Girls played in the PSSA Softball Finals. It was an absolute pleasure to train the teams and it was through your dedication and hard work that you were successful in reaching the finals. On the day the boys tried hard but unfortunately were runners up. The girls left their best game until last and through a BRILLIANT team effort won 9 - 0. Selective High School Applications - Year 7 2012

Expression of interest: Year 7 entry into selective high schools in 2012

Selective high schools are one strategy used by the Department of Education and Training

to cater for the learning needs of gifted and talented students.

If you would like your child to go to a selective high school in Year 7 in 2012, you will need to

apply soon.

From this year, all applications should be made online through an Internet connection. A

limited number of application packages will be provided through the school shortly for those

parents who do not have Internet access.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

Thank you to all who supported and participated in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. The students enjoyed a range of delicious treats while raising a total of $582.50. Each dollar donated will assist in the fight against cancer and will fund the Cancer Council's research, prevention, education and support services.

Demountable buildings

You have probably noticed that a number of demountable buildings have arrived on site during the last school holiday period. Work is currently underway on installing them. I anticipate that classes will move into the demountables in the near future once the installation process is finalised.

Our student welfare committee has organised for new signs displaying our revised school rules. You might like to go over these new rules with your children - ready for when the new displays go up.

Our schools rules are:

Act fairly and responsibly
Care about the feelings of others
Cooperate with others
Do your best in all activities
Be honest in everything you do
